Application deadline: Feb 10, 2013

The Courtauld Institute of Art
University of London

Two Lectureships in 20th-century Modernism
(£33,465-£45,446 pa inc London Allowance)

The Courtauld Institute of Art is the UK’s leading institution for
teaching and research into the History of Art and the conservation of
paintings, and has a distinguished history of scholarship and teaching
in Modernist art. It is also home to one of the finest small art
museums in the world.

The Courtauld seeks to build on these strong foundations by appointing
two permanent full-time lecturers in twentieth-century Modernism. The
positions are open to specialists in any medium – architecture,
painting, sculpture, or the graphic arts – whose research interests
complement those of the Institute’s current permanent staff. The
post-holders will be expected to provide teaching in the area of
European (including British) Modernism c.1900-1940, although candidates
with an interest in non-Western forms of Modernism are also encouraged
to apply. Candidates will also be expected to develop collaborative
courses, and to contribute to the teaching of art-historical
methodology. The minimum requirements for the post are a DPhil or PhD
and some teaching experience.

We are looking for individuals who will bring a new intellectual
dimension to our community; who will attract doctoral students of the
highest calibre; and who will enhance the Courtauld’s reputation for
innovative teaching and ground-breaking research. The selectors will
place considerable emphasis on each candidate’s publications,
achievements and future research plans. They will be looking for strong
indications of the capacity to initiate collaborative research; the
candidate should also be able to outline possible research grant
applications. The starting date for both lectureships is September 2013.

For further details and an application pack, please download details at
http://www.courtauld.ac.uk<http://www.courtauld.ac.uk/> or email
recruitment@courtauld.ac.uk<mailto:recruitment@courtauld.ac.uk>.
Please note that cv’s alone will not be accepted. All applicants must
complete an application pack.

Closing Date: 10 February 2013
Interview Dates: 18-19 March 2013

The Courtauld Institute of Art promotes equal opportunities.

Project Summary of a subtheme within Identities and Beliefs

Migration and Mobility through the Life Cycle of Empires
Migration is a constant of human history, for centuries one of the most powerful demographic forces alongside fertility and mortality, and hence a powerful force in shaping identities and beliefs. Yet until relatively recently much of this mobility occurred not within nation states but between and within empire states; indeed, part of the raison d’être of empires – ancient, early modern and modern – was to facilitate or even compel certain types of mobility, while obstructing or preventing others. In some cases it is migration itself that may have propelled the creation of empire. This project would explore comparatively the patterns of mobility and migration across different continents and centuries that may have given rise to the emergence of new empires, the patterns of mobility and migration that were encouraged or enforced by these empires, and the patterns of mobility and migration that emerged during and after their demise. In each case we will further explore the forms of collective belonging (and associated values, ideals and beliefs) that both underpinned and arose from these movements of population, whether religious, ethnic, diasporic, cosmopolitan etc.
